This is a great question!
I didn’t realize that I’d been art journaling for some time before I knew that this activity had a name and that other people were doing it, too.
Just like so many women I encounter, life has inflicted a few unexpected wounds that tend to fester if not healed from the inside out. And like so many others, I was desperate for a way to find peace and health. My first few art journals are filled with images that helped me exorcise old stuff.
The first books I tried for art journaling were poor choices. Paper fell apart or warped as I applied paint and glue to the pages. In time I found my favorite paper that could withstand the layers of stuff I like to use. I found that Strathmore Visual Journals, mixed-media paper and watercolor paper fill my needs the best.
I use my art journals for different purposes now than when I began. Sometimes I just play with art supplies. Other times I try out ideas for classes. Most often I art journal to untangle my brain and heart.
