I was a little embarrassed, but I responded with, "Really? What are Zentangles®??"
"That -- that drawing you're making, that's called a Zentangle."
Then she pulled out this fantastic, hand bound journal that had all sorts of paint and tape and torn pieces of paper in it. She opened it and began flipping through the pages. I think my jaw stayed opened for the entire flip through.
She had drawing, writing, tape, glue, paint, collage, fabric, texture, color, and just pure goodness flying from the pages of that art journal. I was in love. I asked all kinds of questions and sat there running my hands over the pages and admiring her art. But of course my friend eventually arrived and the lady packed up her bag and moved to a different table. She stayed in the café a while, but as she started out the door, she passed me a napkin with five words written on it. They were: Google "art journaling" sometime today!!
Needless to say, I did and the rest of my week was spent on YouTube and reading blogs. I was overwhelmed and in awe and overjoyed about the possibilities. But soon that turned into this stifling fear -- "What if I mess it up?" "Is this the right way to do this?" "How do I know if this is good or not?" -- YES!!! All of my inner critics started chiming in. They were in full swing by the end of that first week and I think I put the idea of having an art journal on the back burner. I was feeling a bit inadequate and unsure about where to begin.
So I paused.
But I couldn't stop watching the videos on YouTube and reading the blogs. Then I came across Tamara Laporte (aka - Willowing) and she was offering several online classes. I signed up for two of them and the rest is history. I've been calling myself an art journal junkie ever since.
Let's get started!!!
